With a little planning, you can create a sensory-friendly holiday that everyone enjoys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-the-pre-game-briefing-managing-relatives\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_The_Pre-Game_Briefing_Managing_Relatives\"><\/span><strong>1. The Pre-Game Briefing (Managing Relatives)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest stressor is often well-meaning family members. <em>&#8220;Why won&#8217;t he give Grandma a kiss?&#8221;<\/em> <em>&#8220;He\u2019s being so wild!&#8221;<\/em> Send a text or email before the gathering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>&#8220;Leo is in a phase where he is sensitive to noise and touch. We are practicing &#8216;high-fives&#8217; instead of hugs. Thanks for helping us with this!&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Setting the boundary beforehand protects your child from being forced into uncomfortable interactions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-dress-for-comfort-not-instagram\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Dress_for_Comfort_Not_Instagram\"><\/span><strong>2. Dress for Comfort, Not Instagram<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We all love a cute holiday outfit. But a stiff shirt with a tight collar or a scratchy tulle dress can torture a sensory-sensitive child. If they are uncomfortable physically, their fuse will be short. <strong>Compromise:<\/strong> Let them wear the fancy outfit for 10 minutes for a photo, then change into soft cotton &#8220;party pajamas&#8221; or comfortable leggings. A happy child in sweatpants is better than a screaming child in a suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-create-a-quiet-zone\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Create_a_%E2%80%9CQuiet_Zone%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>3. Create a &#8220;Quiet Zone&#8221;<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon arriving at a party (or in your own home), designate a <strong>Safe Space<\/strong>. It could be a guest bedroom, a tent in the corner, or even the car. Tell your child: <em>&#8220;If it gets too loud and you feel like you are going to explode, you can come hide in here.&#8221;<\/em> Pack a <strong>Sensory Survival Kit<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Noise-canceling headphones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A fidget spinner or stress ball.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A tablet (yes, screens are great tools for decompression).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-stick-to-the-anchor-routines\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Stick_to_the_%E2%80%9CAnchor%E2%80%9D_Routines\"><\/span><strong>4. Stick to the &#8220;Anchor&#8221; Routines<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You can&#8217;t keep the whole schedule, but keep the &#8220;anchors.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Food:<\/strong> If your child is a picky eater, feed them a solid meal <em>before<\/em> the party. Being &#8220;hangry&#8221; + overstimulated is dangerous. Bring their safe snacks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sleep:<\/strong> Try to keep wake-up times and nap times consistent, even if bedtime is later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-the-escape-hatch\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_The_Escape_Hatch\"><\/span><strong>5. The Escape Hatch<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Drive your own car. Do not rely on a ride from a relative who might want to stay until midnight. Have a code word with your partner. If one of you says &#8220;Pineapple,&#8221; it means: <em>The child is done. We need to leave in 10 minutes, no negotiations.<\/em> Leaving early on a high note is better than staying late and ending with a tantrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-focus-on-connection-not-tradition\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Focus_on_Connection_Not_Tradition\"><\/span><strong>6. Focus on Connection, Not Tradition<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If the traditional holiday parade is too loud, skip it. Watch it on TV with hot cocoa instead. If the mall Santa is terrifying, write him a letter instead. You don&#8217;t have to do things just because &#8220;we always do them.&#8221; Create new traditions that fit your child\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holidays are about joy.
