We don&#8217;t want them to get hurt. But experts in child development and &#8220;Risky Play&#8221; suggest that the phrase &#8220;Be Careful&#8221; is not only ineffective, it might actually be harmful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-be-careful-doesnt-work\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_%E2%80%9CBe_Careful%E2%80%9D_Doesnt_Work\"><\/span><strong>Why &#8220;Be Careful&#8221; Doesn&#8217;t Work<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>It is Too Vague:<\/strong> What does &#8220;be careful&#8221; mean? Does it mean &#8220;slow down&#8221;? Does it mean &#8220;hold on tight&#8221;? Does it mean &#8220;look at your feet&#8221;? A child doesn&#8217;t know what action to take.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It Induces Fear:<\/strong> Hearing &#8220;Be careful&#8221; constantly tells the child: <em>The world is dangerous, and I am not capable of handling it.<\/em> It breeds anxiety, not caution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It Becomes White Noise:<\/strong> If you say it every time they climb a ladder, they stop hearing it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-importance-of-risky-play\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Importance_of_Risky_Play\"><\/span><strong>The Importance of Risky Play<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Ni\u00f1os <em>need<\/em> to take risks. Climbing high, balancing on logs, and jumping off swings teaches them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Body Awareness:<\/strong> What can my body do?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Risk Assessment:<\/strong> Is this too high? Can I make this jump?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Resilience:<\/strong> If I fall, I can get back up. If we remove all risk (or hover over them nervously), they never learn to judge safety for themselves. They become accident-prone because they rely on <em>you<\/em> to tell them when to stop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-to-say-instead\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_Say_Instead\"><\/span><strong>What to Say Instead<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Our goal is to move from <strong>Managing<\/strong> them to <strong>Mentoring<\/strong> them. We want to draw their attention to the environment so <em>they<\/em> can make the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. To Increase Awareness:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>&#8220;Notice how slippery the rocks are because of the rain.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&#8220;Do you see where your foot is going?&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&#8220;That branch looks thin. Does it feel strong?&#8221;<\/em> These phrases force the child to pause and evaluate the situation themselves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. To Check In:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>&#8220;How does your body feel up there?&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&#8220;Do you feel safe?&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&#8220;What is your plan for getting down?&#8221;<\/em> Asking &#8220;What is your plan?&#8221; is powerful. It engages their prefrontal cortex (problem-solving brain).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. When It Is Actually Dangerous:<\/strong> If they are about to run into traffic or touch a hot stove, &#8220;Be careful&#8221; is too slow. Use direct commands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>&#8220;STOP.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&#8220;Come down now.&#8221;<\/em> Save the urgent voice for urgent situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"practical-example\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Practical_Example\"><\/span><strong>Practical Example<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scenario:<\/strong> Your child is climbing a tall tree. <strong>Old Way:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;Be careful! You&#8217;re going to fall! Get down!&#8221;<\/em> (Child feels anxious or ignores you). <strong>New Way:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;Wow, you are really high! I see you using your strong arms. Make sure you test the branches before you put your weight on them.&#8221;<\/em> (Child feels capable but alert).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It takes practice to bite your tongue. The next time you want to shout &#8220;Be Careful,&#8221; take a breath. Look at the situation. Is there immediate danger? If not, try asking a question instead.
