The toy has only one function. <em>&#8220;What does this toy do?&#8221;<\/em> is the only question.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Open-Ended Toys (Passive Toy, Active Child):<\/strong> Think of a plain cardboard box, a set of wooden blocks, or a silk scarf.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The toy does nothing on its own. It creates no sound, no light, no movement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The child must provide the imagination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The question shifts from <em>&#8220;What does this toy do?&#8221;<\/em> to <em>&#8220;What can I do with this toy?&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-the-cardboard-box-wins\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_the_Cardboard_Box_Wins\"><\/span><strong>Why the Cardboard Box Wins<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To you, it is trash. To a child, a cardboard box is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A rocket ship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A cave for a bear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A boat on the ocean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A robot costume.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A castle tower.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the box is undefined, the child\u2019s brain has to work to project their imagination onto it. This is cognitive heavy lifting. It builds <strong>divergent thinking<\/strong>, the ability to see multiple solutions to a single problem. This is the root of innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-screen-trap\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_%E2%80%9CScreen%E2%80%9D_Trap\"><\/span><strong>The &#8220;Screen&#8221; Trap<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Screens (tablets, TV) are the ultimate close-ended &#8220;toy.&#8221; Even &#8220;educational&#8221; apps are usually rigid. You press &#8216;A&#8217;, the pig says &#8216;Oink&#8217;. The child is reacting, not creating. If a child is used to flashing, singing toys, they might look at a pile of blocks and say, &#8220;I\u2019m bored.&#8221; <strong>Let them be bored.<\/strong> Boredom is the gateway to creativity. Wait it out. Eventually, they will pick up a block. Then another.
